Council Hosts Sue Ellen Brown Gallery Showing

The Montevallo Arts Council presents paintings by Birmingham artist Sue Ellen Brown. An opening for the show will be held in Parnell Memorial Library on Wednesday, August 12 at 6:00 p.m.

Sue Ellen Brown has enjoyed success over three decades in the commercial and fine art worlds. With a BA and BFA from the University of North Texas, she worked at the famous Sketch Pad Studio in Dallas before becoming a staff artist with Hallmark. Sue Ellen has illustrated a number of children’s books for a variety of publishers, including Macmillan’s Winter’s Child, and produced countless images for promotional materials ranging from gift wrap to Happy Meals, working with commercial clients such as McDonalds, Denny’s, and Pepsi.

Painting under the pseudonym “ZooLN”, Sue Ellen creates fluid organic forms that are at once representational and conceptual, playfully academic, intricate yet deceptive in their apparent simplicity. Her seashell designs offer an endless variety of form, texture, and color: each aspect a point of departure for creative expression and artistic challenge.

Described by the Birmingham News as “lyrical linear abstractions,” ZooLN’s Shells Series evokes a range of scale, color and form reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe, instilling a profound sense of passion, intellect, and subtle movement into a highly structured, yet elegant graphic space

Council Supports UM Choir Documentation Effort

The Montevallo Arts Council supported an historic European tour of the University of Montevallo Concert Choir this spring. Under the direction of UM Director of Choral Activities Dr. Melinda Doyle, the choir performed in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Austria. This trip marks the first time a UM music ensemble has been invited to perform abroad.

The Arts Council board provided funding to send a professional musician to document the trip for the Montevallo community. In addition to a live trip blog, the documentary effort will also involve the collection of video, audio, and photographs to be added to the digital collections of the University of Montevallo Archives. Stay tuned to our website for further updates on this project!
