Council Annouces Musical Talent for Annual Festival
The Montevallo Arts Council is pleased to announce musical talent for the annual Arts Festival. "Riverboat John" Ferguson will play at this year's show.
"Riverboat John" Ferguson, grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. After graduation from Huntsville High School, he migrated to Greenwich Village, New York, to join the Folk Revival Movement, where he bumped elbows with the avante garde, folk, blues, jazz, pop, gospel, and rock performers of the day. He completed his studies from George Washington University and travelled the world during and after his service in the U.S. Army.
Riverboat John's appearances are not unlike the travelling minstrel who comes to town to tell stories and sing songs. His stories can best be described as "Practical-Americana" with "life-learning lessons." He plays his own style of banjo and other instruments and can sing a variety of styles and genres. He is currently touring North America with the "Riverboat John" Community Concert Stage Show, highlighting his one-man-show "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Riverboat John", as well as numerous educational projects with schools and universities. He is working with The Big Read Program in his effort to support reading and literacy programs for under-privileged children and adults.
Council Adopts New Name; Sets 2014 Festival Date
On July 16, 2013, the Montevallo Arts Council voted to rebrand its signature event in Orr Park. Montevallo's largest annual arts event will now be known as the Montevallo Arts Festival! For seven years, the Council has hosted an event that features visual arts, music, dance, and the written and spoken word. We hope that our new name will be a better match for an event that embraces art of all forms.
