Montevallo Main Street Players
Montevallo Main Street Players is a very active community theater group. It was formed in 1972 as the Shelby County Community Theater.

The Montevallo Main Street Players hosted Sounds of the Season VI on Sunday, December 13, at 3:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Montevallo High School, 980 Oak Street in Montevallo.
MMSP’s Elaine Hughes interpreted a selection from “The Christmas Letters” by Lee Smith, and The Montevallo High School Moonlight Players performed the classic poem “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore.
In addition, the Montevallo Community Chorale, directed by Gary Packwood, sang festive holiday songs. Joe Ardovino conducted the Montevallo Community Band in a program of seasonal music. An audience sing-along concluded the program.
Admission was one new toy per person for children ages 1-12 or a cash donation to benefit Shelby Emergency Assistance’s Project Christmas.
Nunsense, a musical comedy with book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, was staged at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre, 277 Park Road in Montevallo, November 12-14 at 7:30 p.m. and November 15 at 2:00 p.m.
The cast included (l-r) Kaylee MacKnight, Jane Clayton, Robin Norsworthy, Michele Santiago, and Mary Howard. Tracy Webster of Alabaster was the director and Elaine Hughes of Montevallo was producer.
The winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards, the musical comedy follows the nuns of the Order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken while they prepare the eighth grade production of “Grease” at the Mount Saint Helen’s School.
Nunsense was produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
ART, a one-act comedy by Yasmina Reza as translated by Christopher Hampton, was presented at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre June 12-13 at 7:30 p.m. and June 14 at 2 p.m.

Boy Gets Girl was performed on Friday April 17; Saturday, April 18; and Sunday, April 19 as part of the Montevallo Literary Festival and an April Celebration of the Arts. The play was written by Rebecca Gilman and directed by Sue Ellen Gerrells.

2008 Productions

Sounds of the Season (with the Montevallo Chorale, Community Band, and MHS) was presented on Sunday, December 14, at 3:00 p.m. at Montevallo High School. It included a readers theatre production of “The Long Christmas Dinner” by Thornton Wilder, adapted by Mary Howard; festive holiday songs by the Montevallo Community Chorale, directed by Gary Packwood; and seasonal music by the Montevallo Community Band directed by Joe Ardovino.

Blithe Spirit, a comedy by Noel Coward, was performed on Friday, October 24; Saturday, October 25; Sunday, October 26, at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre.

Cobb, a drama by Lee Blessing, was performed on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, June 22, 2:00 p.m. at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre.

A. R. Gurney’s comedy, The Cocktail Hour, directed by George Scott, was performed on Friday and Saturday, February 22 and 23, 2008, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. at the Parnell Memorial Library Theatre.
On Thursday, February 28, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., Montevallo Main Street Players, the Montevallo Branch of American Association of University Women, and the University of Montevallo Black Heritage Committee cosponsored the production of Womanrise, a poetry reading coordinated by Georgette Norman, Director of the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery. Readers from Montevallo included Elaine Hughes, Loretta Cobb, Teresa Whiting, and Eleanor Davis, with music by Barbara Belisle.

For some photos of the 2007 season, click here. In addition to the three plays of the 2007 season, MMSP coordinated the December production of Sounds of the Season. MMSP, the Montevallo Community Band, The Montevallo Chorale, and the Montevallo High School drama class presented a memorable evening of music and dramatic readings. Birmingham television station WIAT Channel 42 captured some highlights (7.95 MB - WMVformat).
